The formulas
minutes = decimal part × 60 · decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600
An hour has 60 minutes, so the digits after the decimal point are not minutes. They are a fraction of an hour and have to be multiplied by 60. The converter rounds to the nearest second, so 2.3 hours is exactly 2:18:00.
Worked example: 7.75 hours
- The whole number is the hours: 7 h.
- Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 min.
- Nothing is left over, so there are 0 seconds: 7:45:00.
The other way: 7 h 45 min = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.

French decimal time
“Decimal time” is also the name of a different idea: a clock that divides the day into 10 hours, each of 100 minutes, each of 100 seconds. One decimal hour is 2 h 24 min of ordinary time and one decimal second is 0.864 ordinary seconds. Noon, halfway through the day, is 5:00:00.
Result
12:00:00 = 5:00:00 decimal time
decimal time = seconds since midnight ÷ 86,400 × 100,000, read as h:mm:ss
Example: 6:00 in the morning is 21,600 seconds after midnight, a quarter of the day. A quarter of 100,000 decimal seconds is 25,000, read as 2:50:00.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as the hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 to get the minutes. For 7.75: 7 hours, and 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
How do I convert hours and minutes to a decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 h 45 min is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.
