Volume, weight and why the ingredient matters
Recipes measure in two different ways. Cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces and milliliters measure volume: how much space something takes up. Grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds measure weight. Within one kind the conversion is fixed. A US cup is always 16 tablespoons or 236.59 mL, and a pound is always 453.59 g.
Between the two kinds there is no fixed factor, because a cup of one ingredient does not weigh the same as a cup of another. A cup of all-purpose flour is 120 g; a cup of granulated sugar is 198 g; a cup of honey is 336 g. So the converter asks for the ingredient before it will turn a volume into a weight, and it only lists ingredients whose weight we could check in a named source. Each result shows the line it is based on.
The measures on this site are US customary: the cup is 8 US fluid ounces, the tablespoon half a fluid ounce and the teaspoon a third of a tablespoon. Measuring cups and spoons from other countries can be a different size, so check which the recipe's author means.
Kitchen mode makes the converter easier to use with floury hands: larger buttons, one-tap amounts such as 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2, the common ingredients as buttons and, on phones that support it, an option to keep the screen from going dark.

What the converter will not do
It will not guess. Milk, cream and yogurt are missing from the ingredient list because the chart we rely on rounds them to 8 ounces per cup, which is about 4% light for water. Until we can cite a checked density for them, convert those by volume (cups to milliliters) and weigh them if the recipe needs grams.
