How volume units fit together
Volume units come in three families, and most mistakes happen where they meet.
Metric. The liter is one cubic decimeter, so 1,000 liters make a cubic meter and one milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter.
Cubic units. A cubic inch, foot or yard is the cube of the length unit. Because 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 cubic inch is 2.54 × 2.54 × 2.54 = 16.387064 cm³ exactly. The factor is cubed, never used as it is.
Liquid measures. The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which makes it 3.785411784 liters. A quart is a quarter of a gallon, a pint an eighth and a fluid ounce 1/128. The imperial gallon used in the United Kingdom is a different unit, defined as exactly 4.54609 liters. It is about 20% larger, and it is divided differently: an imperial pint has 20 fluid ounces, a US pint 16.
So a “pint” or a “gallon” in a British source is not the same quantity as in an American one. The converter above lists both sets by name, and the pages for gallons, quarts and pints have a switch for it.
Cups, tablespoons and teaspoons are volume units too. They live with the cooking conversions, together with cups to grams by ingredient. To work out the volume of a box from its sides, use the cubic inches calculator. To turn a volume into a weight you need a density: see milliliters to grams.
