How temperature scales relate
Temperature is the one everyday quantity you cannot convert with a single multiplication, because the scales do not share a zero. Celsius puts 0 at the freezing point of water, Fahrenheit puts 32 there, and kelvin starts at absolute zero. A conversion therefore needs two steps: shift the zero, then rescale the size of the degree.
The kelvin is the SI unit. A Celsius temperature is the kelvin temperature minus 273.15, and one degree Celsius is the same size as one kelvin. A Fahrenheit degree is 5/9 of that size. Put together:
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9/5 and add 32.
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9.
- Celsius to kelvin: add 273.15.
All of these numbers are exact, so the only rounding is in the decimals you choose to show. The two scales most people switch between meet at one point, −40, and move apart from there: by 100 °C the Fahrenheit reading is 212.
If you are converting a change in temperature rather than a reading, leave the 32 out: a rise of 5 °C is a rise of 9 °F. The dedicated pages for Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius add a worked example, a chart from −40 upwards and a thermometer-style scale.

Popular questions
What is the formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit?
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. The other way: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Both are exact.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit the same?
At −40. It is the only point where the two scales cross: −40 °C = −40 °F.
What is absolute zero in Celsius and Fahrenheit?
0 K is −273.15 °C and −459.67 °F. Both values are exact, because the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are defined from the kelvin.
How do I convert a temperature difference?
Leave out the 32. A difference of 1 °C equals a difference of 1.8 °F, and a difference of 1 kelvin equals a difference of 1 °C. So a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F.
