How area units fit together
An area unit is a length unit squared, and so is its conversion factor. One foot is 0.3048 meter, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meter. One mile is 1.609344 kilometers, so one square mile is 2.589988110336 square kilometers. Reaching for the length factor instead of its square is the usual way an area conversion goes wrong: it puts a floor plan in square feet out by a factor of more than three.
The same rule explains the round numbers inside each system. A square foot holds 12 × 12 = 144 square inches, a square yard 3 × 3 = 9 square feet and a square meter 100 × 100 = 10,000 square centimeters.
Land has two units of its own. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, a square 100 meters on a side. An acre is 43,560 square feet, and 640 acres make a square mile. Since 2023 the US acre has been based on the international foot, which makes it exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters; before that it was tied to the US survey foot and was larger by about 4 parts in a million. One hectare is about 2.471 acres.
The pages below convert the common pairs with a chart you can print. If you have the sides of a room rather than its area, start with the square feet calculator or the square inch calculator, which multiply length by width and show the result in several units.

Popular questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560. In metric units an acre is 4,046.8564224 m², or about 0.4047 hectares.
How many square feet are in a square meter?
About 10.7639. The exact relationship is 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², which is 0.3048 squared.
Why can I not use the length factor for areas?
Area grows with the square of length. 1 meter is 3.2808 feet, but 1 square meter is 3.2808 × 3.2808 = 10.764 square feet. Using the length factor on an area is the most common mistake in area conversions.
How big is a hectare?
A hectare is exactly 10,000 m² (a square 100 m on each side). That is 2.4711 acres or 107,639 square feet.
