How the conversion works
centimeters = feet × 30.48 + inches × 2.54
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters and one foot is 12 inches, so one foot is exactly 30.48 centimeters. Both factors are defined values, which makes feet and inches to centimeters exact.
The other way round, centimeters are divided by 2.54 to get inches, the whole feet are taken out (12 inches each) and what is left is shown as inches, rounded the way you choose.
Worked example: 5 ft 7 in
- Feet to centimeters: 5 × 30.48 = 152.4 cm.
- Inches to centimeters: 7 × 2.54 = 17.78 cm.
- Add them: 152.4 + 17.78 = 170.18 cm, which is 1.7018 m.

How do I convert centimeters to feet and inches by hand?
Divide by 2.54 to get inches, divide the inches by 12 and keep the whole number as feet, then the remainder is the inches. For 180 cm: 180 ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 in; 70.87 ÷ 12 = 5 with 10.87 in left over, so 5 ft 10.9 in.
Is 5.5 feet the same as 5 ft 5 in?
No. 5.5 feet is five and a half feet, and half a foot is 6 inches, so 5.5 ft is 5 ft 6 in (167.64 cm). 5 ft 5 in is 165.1 cm.
Why does 180 cm show as 5 ft 10.9 in and not 5 ft 11 in?
Because 180 cm is 70.866 inches, slightly less than 71. The converter rounds inches to one decimal by default. Change “Round inches to” to the nearest whole inch and it shows 5 ft 11 in.
