The formula
inches = pixels ÷ pixels per inch
A pixel has no fixed physical size. It only becomes a length once you say how many of them are packed into an inch. That is why the converter needs a resolution as well as a pixel count, and why the same image can be 10 inches wide on one output and 3.2 inches on another.
Worked example: 960 pixels
- At the web value of 96 PPI: 960 ÷ 96 = 10 inches (25.4 cm).
- Printed at 300 PPI: 960 ÷ 300 = 3.2 inches (8.128 cm).
Which resolution should I use?
- 96 PPI for sizes on a web page. CSS defines 1 inch as 96 pixels.
- For print, the resolution your printer or print shop asks for. 300 PPI is a figure they often quote; the buttons above cover the usual values.
The PPI of a physical screen is a third thing: its pixel count along one side divided by the length of that side in inches.

Frequently asked questions
How many pixels are in an inch?
It depends on the resolution. On a web page, CSS defines 1 inch as 96 pixels. In print it is whatever the file is printed at: at 300 pixels per inch an inch holds 300 pixels.
How do I convert pixels to inches?
Divide the number of pixels by the pixels per inch. 1,800 px at 300 PPI is 1,800 ÷ 300 = 6 inches.
How many pixels do I need for a print of a given size?
Multiply the size in inches by the resolution the printer asks for. An 8 × 10 inch print at 300 PPI needs 2,400 × 3,000 pixels. Type the inches into the right-hand field to work it out.
Is PPI the same as DPI?
Strictly, PPI counts the pixels of an image per inch and DPI counts the ink dots a printer lays down per inch. In everyday use, and in most software dialogs, the two words are used for the same setting: how many image pixels go into each printed inch.
Why is 96 the default?
Because that is the CSS definition used by web browsers: 1in = 96px. It describes how web content is sized, not the physical pixel density of your screen, which is usually higher.
