How to convert kilobytes to megabytes
megabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,000
1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes (SI prefix kilo). 1 megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (SI prefix mega). 1 kibibyte is 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰).
The factor is exact in both directions: 1 kB = 0.001 MB and 1 MB = 1,000 kB. Nothing is rounded until you choose how many decimals to show.
Worked example: 2,048 kB
- Start with the value in kilobytes: 2,048 kB.
- Divide by 1,000, because 1 megabyte = 1,000 kilobytes: 2,048 ÷ 1,000 = 2.048 MB.

1,000 or 1,024?
In the SI, kilo, mega and giga always mean 1,000, 1,000,000 and 1,000,000,000, so 1 MB is 1,000 kB. This is how storage devices are labelled. Computer memory is usually counted in steps of 1,024 instead. The IEC gave those units their own names in 1998: kibibyte (KiB, 1,024 bytes), mebibyte (MiB, 1,048,576 bytes) and gibibyte (GiB, 1,073,741,824 bytes).
Many programs still write “KB”, “MB” and “GB” when they mean the binary units. If a size on your screen does not match the decimal result, switch the converter to binary. The difference is 2.4% per step: 1 GiB is 1.073741824 GB.

Frequently asked questions
How many megabytes are in 1 kilobyte?
1 kilobyte is exactly 0.001 megabytes. 1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes (SI prefix kilo).
How do I convert kilobytes to megabytes?
Divide by 1,000: megabytes = kilobytes ÷ 1,000. For example, 2,048 kB = 2.048 MB.
How many kilobytes are in 1 megabyte?
1 megabyte is exactly 1,000 kilobytes. To go the other way, use the megabytes to kilobytes converter.
Is the kB to MB conversion exact?
Yes. 1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes (SI prefix kilo). The factor 0.001 follows from the definitions, so the only rounding is in the number of decimals you display.
Why does my computer show a smaller size than the box?
A drive sold as 500 GB holds 500,000,000,000 bytes. Counted in binary units that is about 465.66 GiB, and many systems display that number with the label “GB”. Nothing is missing; the same bytes are being counted in units of 1,024 instead of 1,000.
