How to convert millimeters to inches
inches = millimeters ÷ 25.4
1 millimeter is one thousandth of a meter (SI prefix milli, 10⁻³). 1 inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters.
Dividing by 25.4 is exact. Written as a multiplication the factor is a repeating decimal, 1 mm = 0.03937007874016… in, so a rounded multiplier such as 0.03937 is slightly off. This converter keeps the exact fraction (5/127) and rounds only the result it shows.
Worked example: 210 mm
- Start with the value in millimeters: 210 mm.
- Divide by 25.4, because 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters: 210 ÷ 25.4 = 8.267716535….
- Round to the precision you need: 8.27 in to two decimals.
- On a tape measure that is 8 1/4 in to the nearest 1/16.

Metric and inch sizes rarely match
Because 25.4 has no simple common factor with the usual inch fractions, a round metric size almost never equals a round inch size. 6 mm is 0.2362 in, close to but not the same as 1/4 in (6.35 mm). When a part has to fit, compare the decimal values and the error shown next to the fraction instead of the nearest named size.

Frequently asked questions
How many inches are in 1 millimeter?
1 millimeter is about 0.0393701 inches. 1 millimeter is one thousandth of a meter (SI prefix milli, 10⁻³).
How do I convert millimeters to inches?
Divide by 25.4: inches = millimeters ÷ 25.4. For example, 210 mm = 8.27 in.
How many millimeters are in 1 inch?
1 inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters. To go the other way, use the inches to millimeters converter.
Is the mm to in conversion exact?
The relationship is exact (1 in = 25.4 mm), but 1 ÷ 25.4 is a repeating decimal, 0.03937007874…. The converter works with the exact fraction and rounds only the displayed result, so it does not pick up the small error a rounded multiplier would cause.
How do I get the result as a fraction of an inch?
Switch on “Inch fractions” under the converter and choose 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64. The result is rounded to the nearest mark and the size of the rounding error is shown next to it, so you can see whether the nearest tape-measure mark is close enough.
