Words to Minutes Calculator: Quick and Easy Reading Time

The formula

Reading time is word count divided by reading speed: minutes = word count ÷ words per minute. This tool splits your pasted text on whitespace to count words (or takes a plain number directly if that's all you enter), then divides by your chosen reading speed.

Worked example

1,000 words at the default speed of 200 words per minute: 1000 ÷ 200 = 5.0 minutes exactly, which the tool displays as 5 minutes and 0 seconds. Paste 850 words at 200 WPM instead and you'd get 4 minutes and 15 seconds (850 ÷ 200 = 4.25 minutes; 0.25 × 60 = 15 seconds).

Reading speed reference

The 200 WPM default is a commonly cited average for adult silent reading of straightforward text — technical or dense material is usually read slower, so adjust the speed field to match your audience rather than relying on the default for, say, a legal document or a poem.

Counting method

Word count is determined by splitting on whitespace and discarding empty strings — it doesn't distinguish between short and long words, so a text full of long technical terms will show the same "word count" as one with equally many short words, even though it would take longer to actually read.
