Percent to Fraction Calculator: Quick and Easy Conversions

The method: reduce by greatest common divisor

Converting a percentage to a fraction takes two steps: divide by 100 to get a decimal, then simplify that decimal to its lowest-terms fraction using the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator.

Worked example: 37.5%

37.5% ÷ 100 = 0.375. The tool scales this to a numerator over 1,000,000 (375,000/1,000,000), then finds the GCD of those two numbers — 125,000 — and divides both by it: 375,000 ÷ 125,000 = 3, and 1,000,000 ÷ 125,000 = 8. Result: 37.5% = 3/8, an exact, fully reduced fraction.

A precision limit worth knowing

The calculator uses a fixed precision of one million (it multiplies the decimal by 1,000,000 before reducing). That's exact for percentages with up to 6 decimal places, but a repeating decimal like 33.333...% won't reduce to the true fraction 1/3 — it'll return a very close but not identical approximation instead, since the tool can't represent an infinitely repeating decimal within a fixed-precision numerator.
