Ounces to Pounds Converter

The formula

1 pound = 16 ounces (avoirdupois, the everyday US/UK weight system), so the conversion is pounds = ounces / 16. The calculator divides your input and rounds to two decimal places.

Worked example

A pound of ground beef weighed at 12 ounces (a common recipe substitution scenario) converts to 12 / 16 = 0.75 pounds. A 40-ounce package converts to 40 / 16 = 2.50 pounds.

Reference weights

8 oz = 0.5 lb (half a pound — a standard steak or coffee-bag size). 16 oz = 1 lb exactly. 32 oz = 2 lb. A typical newborn birth weight of 112 oz converts to 7.00 lb.

Avoirdupois ounces vs. troy or fluid ounces

This calculator assumes the standard avoirdupois ounce used for everyday weight (food, shipping, body weight). Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces, where 1 troy pound = 12 troy ounces, not 16 — plugging a troy-ounce gold or silver weight into this 16-ounce-per-pound formula gives an incorrect result. Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight, and shouldn't be used here at all unless you also know the substance's density.
