The exact conversion factor

One inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters. This isn't a rounded approximation — it's the precise international definition set by the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, which fixed the inch at 25.4 mm exactly across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and other countries then using imperial units. Because the factor is exact, converting mm to inches is a single division with no accumulated rounding error from the conversion factor itself: inches = mm ÷ 25.4. Worked examples

100 mm is a useful one to memorize: it converts to almost exactly 3.94 inches, which is why a 10cm ruler and a 4-inch measurement are near-interchangeable in casual use but not in precision work.

Common real-world reference points

A standard credit card is 85.6 mm wide, which converts to 3.3701 inches. A US Letter sheet of paper is 8.5 inches wide, or 215.9 mm. A typical smartphone screen diagonal like 152.4 mm is exactly 6.0000 inches — screen sizes are usually specified in inches first and manufactured to the millimeter equivalent, which is why round-inch numbers (5", 6", 6.5") are common in phone specs while their millimeter equivalents (127mm, 152.4mm, 165.1mm) look arbitrary.

Precision and rounding

Because 25.4 is exact, the only rounding in this tool happens at the display step (four decimal places), not in the underlying math. For manufacturing and machining tolerances — where mm-to-inch conversion is extremely common because US-made tooling is often specified in inches while parts drawings from elsewhere use millimeters — four decimal places of an inch is well beyond what most shop tolerances require (a typical machining tolerance is ±0.005 in, i.e. two to three decimal places), so this level of precision won't be the limiting factor in practice.

Why divide by 25.4 and not multiply

Millimeters are smaller than inches (there are 25.4 of them in one inch), so a millimeter measurement always converts to a smaller number of inches — dividing, not multiplying, shrinks the value the right direction. The reverse conversion (inches to mm) multiplies by 25.4 instead, since inches are the larger unit.
