Liters to Quarts Converter

The conversion factor

This calculator uses 1 liter = 1.05669 US liquid quarts. That factor comes from the US quart's definition as 1/4 US gallon (946.35 mL), while a liter is exactly 1,000 mL — so a liter is very slightly larger than a US quart.

Worked example

2 liters (the size of a common soda bottle) converts to 2 × 1.05669 = 2.11338, displayed as 2.11 quarts. A 1-liter bottle converts to 1.06 quarts.

US quarts vs. UK/imperial quarts

This tool's 1.05669 factor is for the US liquid quart. The UK imperial quart is a different, larger unit — 1 liter equals about 0.8799 imperial quarts, not 1.05669. If your source figure is British (a recipe, an engine oil spec, an old UK cookbook), using this US-quart result will be off by roughly 20%. Check which quart your source means before treating the output as exact.

Where this comes up

Recipe conversion between metric (liters) and US customary (quarts) measurements, converting engine oil or coolant capacities listed in liters to quarts for US-spec vehicles, and lab or brewing volume conversions where source material uses one system and your equipment is marked in the other.
