Gallons to Cubic Meters Converter: Quick & Simple

The formula and which gallon it uses

This calculator uses the US liquid gallon, where 1 gallon = 0.00378541 cubic meters (equivalently, 1 gallon = 3.78541 liters). The multiplication is: cubic meters = gallons × 0.00378541.

Worked example

50 gallons — the size of a common home water heater — converts to 50 × 0.00378541 = 0.189271 cubic meters (about 189 liters). For a smaller figure: 1 gallon of paint equals 0.003785 cubic meters, or 3.785 liters.

Imperial vs. US gallons — why it matters

The UK/imperial gallon is a different, larger unit: 1 imperial gallon = 0.00454609 cubic meters, about 20% more than the US gallon used here. If you're converting a fuel tank capacity or recipe quantity specified in imperial gallons (common in the UK, Canada, and older engineering documents), plugging that number into this US-gallon calculator will understate the volume by roughly one-fifth. Check which gallon your source figure uses before relying on the result.

Typical use cases

Tank and reservoir sizing, shipping and freight volume calculations, and converting US-labeled container sizes (5-gallon buckets, 55-gallon drums) into metric cubic meters for international paperwork or engineering specs that require SI units.
