Feet to Inches Calculator

The formula

There are exactly 12 inches in 1 foot, so the conversion is inches = feet × 12 — no rounding, no approximation, since both units are defined in whole-number relation to each other. Enter 5.5 feet and the calculator returns 5.5 × 12 = 66 inches — a useful check figure since 5'6" is a common height to convert.

Fractional feet

Feet measurements are often given as feet-and-inches (5'6") rather than decimal feet (5.5 ft). To use this calculator with a feet-and-inches figure, convert the inches part to a decimal fraction of a foot first: 6 inches = 6/12 = 0.5, so 5'6" becomes 5.5 feet. The input field accepts decimals directly (it uses step="any"), so 5.5, 5.25, or 5.75 all work without extra conversion.

Reference conversions

1 foot = 12 inches. 2 feet = 24 inches. 3 feet (1 yard) = 36 inches. 10 feet = 120 inches. A standard interior door height, 6.67 feet (6'8"), works out to 80 inches.

Where this gets used

Feet-to-inches conversion shows up constantly in construction and woodworking measurements, where plans are drawn in feet but a tape measure or caliper reads in inches, and in fabric or paper sizing where inch-based product specs need to be checked against a foot-based space.
