How the conversion pipeline works

Rather than storing a separate formula for every possible unit pair, the calculator converts your input to meters first, then converts that meters value to your target unit. That's two multiplications instead of dozens of hard-coded pairs. The eight supported units and their meter equivalents: 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 cm = 0.01 m, 1 mm = 0.001 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 yard = 0.9144 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 inch = 0.0254 m.

Worked example

Converting 5 miles to kilometers: step one, 5 × 1,609.344 = 8,046.72 meters. Step two, 8,046.72 ÷ 1,000 = 8.04672 kilometers. The result box shows this to six decimal places, so you'd see "5 mi = 8.046720 km".

Where the constants come from

1 mile = 1,609.344 m and 1 yard = 0.9144 m are both exact definitions under the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, not rounded approximations — so the tool's outputs for imperial-to-metric conversions are exact, limited only by floating-point precision, not by an approximated conversion factor.

Common reference conversions

1 foot = 12 inches = 0.3048 m. 1 yard = 3 feet = 0.9144 m. A 10K race is 10 km = 6.2137 miles. A standard US letter sheet is 11 inches long, which is 27.94 cm or 0.2794 m.
